Communicating Through Change and Crisis

I spoke to Public Relations Society of America columnist Melissa Vela-Williamson, M.A., APR, Fellow PRSA, CDP about all things crisis communications—a conversation that couldn’t have come at a more relevant time.

I recently wrapped up a three-month deployment assisting with wildfire response efforts in Los Angeles. It was one of the most intense and humbling experiences of my decade-long career in government communications. From real-time coordination to supporting impacted communities, the lessons I took away have deeply reinforced the importance of clarity, compassion, and collaboration in a crisis.
